Dogeared Jewels and Gifts have been hand crafted in California for 20 years, when designer Marcia Maizel-Clarke recognized the need for jewelry that speaks. The style is modern and versatile, inspired by California’s free spirited, natural beauty. Dogeared designs range from subtle classics to eclectic, unexpected statements, all designed in the spirit of love, kindness, and consciousness. Dogeared believes ‘good things happen’. The brand is more than a jewelry line and embraces the stories, happy moments, milestones and experiences… that celebrate, connect and inspire customers. Each piece tells a story of individuality, self-expression, love, and friendship. Each jewel is handmade in the USA, collectible, and one of a kind. Their handmade necklaces are collected by mothers, sisters, daughters and friends from around the world.

As a certified B-Corporation, Dogeared is proud to be part of a community of companies developing better business practices, creating new ways to measure success, working with dignity and purpose, and using business as a force for good. “Dogeared believes what goes around comes around. We are committed to the same values we held when we started on this journey in 1991… And we will always design with the planet in mind and support nonprofit groups working to heal the environment, create social change, doing what we love, and loving what we do: creating jewelry that puts good energy out into the world, and makes personal, positive statements about people who wear it.” – Marcia Maizel-Clarke

The company has been in the jewelry business since 1935. Founded in Seattle by Milton Sholdt, it is currently under the direction of brother Brian and Dustin Sholdt, grandsons of Milton Sholdt. Together they own and operate the shop bearing their name. For over 75 years the Sholdt family has been making jewelry in their unassuming Seattle area workshop. In four generations, the business has grown from a repair bench to an internationally recognized design and manufacturing house for wedding and engagement rings, known simply as “Sholdt.” Still, whatever success they find as designers, for the brothers the jewelry trade is above all about family and history. They don’t just make jewelry because they have a passion for it; they make it because that is what their family does.

Thomas Mann was born in Northampton, Pennsylvania and raised in Allentown, Pennsylvania. At sixteen he went to work with a silversmith and also started selling his own bangles in high school to make extra cash. This is where his fascination with jewelry began. Unlike most other leading jewelry artists, Thomas Mann is the product of neither a conventional university nor an art school education. He started out as a physical education major but after forging his advisors signature to take art classes he ended up graduating with a degree in Performing Arts. He developed his use of industrial materials by using various metals in each of his designs. Silver, brass, steel, and copper are all used in his Techno-Romantic style.

Thomas Mann soon moved to New Orleans and became an active participant in the contemporary American Craft movement for over forty years as an artist, gallery owner and educator. He describes himself as an artist working in the medium of jewelry and sculpture. The primary design vocabulary which he employs in the making of jewelry objects combines industrial aesthetics and materials with evocative themes and romantic imagery. He calls this design system Techno-Romantic. Though it’s not the only design mode in which he works, it is the one for which he and his work is best known.

Thomas Mann lives and works in New Orleans where he oversees a jewelry design and production studio, sculpture studio, art gallery and educational workshop.

Todd Pownell’s rings are made to have both undeniable strength and undeniable beauty at the same time. His rings seem forged within the searing heat of an erupting volcano. That’s because his designs evolve from an emotional connection with romanticism to an emotional expression within the jewelry. He accomplishes this by mixing both light and dark metals with 18k gold and inverted diamond settings. Instead of the traditional diamond setting, he sets inverted diamonds into his rings. With the diamonds set “upside-down”, Todd Pownell brings a truly unique look to each and every one of his rings. And as a result, the inverted diamond setting captures and reflects light from every angle to create the feeling of twilight.

Todd’s style has made an indelible impression on the handmade jewelry industry. Making the Todd Pownell collection of wedding bands is simply unforgettable. His brand is synonymous with the meaning of Alternative Bridal. Simply put, Todd makes some of the best one of a kind, unique wedding bands collections available. Check out our blog post, The Organic Styles of Todd Pownell to see why he is our biggest sellers!

Todd on Todd

“Works of jewelry have always been made as both trophy and tribute. Essentially it is part of our celebration of humanity by reinventing nature and bringing it back together through jewelry. As a result, the jeweler should always strive to bring us together from one generation to the next. As artisans we design with these elements and create jewelry meant to speak to your personality. We all work with a focused attention on the craft, which is a visible aspect of our work. And we approach the process of making jewelry with an honest respect for the metals and gemstones we use.” – Todd Pownell

We specialize in helping our clients with custom designs of Todd Pownell’s work. If you don’t see it in our inventory, then let’s design exactly what you are looking for! Please don’t hesitate to call with any questions you may have.

Tru.che is the brainchild of Stevie Koerner and she makes shiny things, professionally. She recently quit her day job to pursue her daydream of making jewelry. Tru.che mostly sells silver pieces, and is guided by the principle that you should wear what you love. As a native to a small town in Michigan, where at the age of 13 her first job was detasseling corn, she loves where she’s from and being connected to nature. Things that make her float and often provide inspiration for her creative outlets, jewelry making included, are: a good vintage find, a beautiful photograph, the mountains, thunderstorms, anything haunted, a great live show, decorating her space, tending to a garden, and collaboration with other creative souls. She also loves Chicago, where she currently lives with her cat, Motown and her mate.

Maja Rose and Tess Lloyd met in 1999 while studying Industrial Design together at the University of Technology, Sydney. After graduating into professional roles, the designers soon sought the fulfillment of creating their own products by hand. Polli was born from their strong interests in sustainable design, craft culture and fashion. The folding methods used in this family of products are influenced by both Japanese and Danish paper designs, and the materials chosen allow them to express their interest in colour and light. By creating home and fashion accessories through manufacturing techniques usually reserved for industrial products, Polli is a hybrid of both product and fashion design. It appropriates materials and processes from other industries for mini mass production.

The Caliber Collection is made up of metal from 250 guns and bullet casings seized by the Newark Police Department. The result is a series of pieces that embody the gun’s transformation from a destructive weapon to a powerful symbol of renewal. Jewelry for a Cause proudly donates a portion of the proceeds from each sale to the Gun Buyback Amnesty program in Newark. Each of the guns was carefully processed and released to Jewelry for a Cause by the Police Department of Newark.  Their serial numbers were tracked and are an important part of the design in each of the pieces of jewelry.  The metal from the guns and bullet casings were shredded by Sims Metal Management in Jersey City. The name Caliber was chosen for its two meanings; the caliber of a gun and how the caliber of a city is raised when illegal guns are taken off its streets.
